Madoka Magica’s Fourth Film Set to Release After 11-Year Wait Since Teaser Debut

The anticipation for the next installment of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica film series is nearly at an end. The long-awaited fourth film in this groundbreaking magical girl anime is set to hit theaters in Japan on August 28.

The release of the new full-length feature, titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising, was announced alongside a new trailer. That title is quite the mouthful!

Madoka Magica first debuted as a 12-episode anime series from studio Shaft back in 2011. It follows a group of schoolgirls, including the main character Madoka Kaname, who make contracts to become magical girls and battle witches. The series cleverly subverts the typical magical girl tropes, taking a darker turn by revealing that all magical girls ultimately fall into despair and transform into witches. In a way, it’s to magical girl anime what Neon Genesis Evangelion is to mecha anime.

Similar to Evangelion, Madoka Magica spawned a series of reboot/sequel films starting in 2012. The first two films, Beginnings and Eternal, were released just a week apart and retell the story from the original anime. The third film, Rebellion, came out in 2013 and introduced an original narrative that continued the journey of the main magical girls. Walpurgisnacht: Rising was teased back in 2015 and officially announced in 2021. Initially set for a 2024 release, it faced delays to 2025, then February 2026, and finally (fingers crossed) to August.

To put it simply, the original series concluded with Madoka ascending to a god-like status, creating a new world free from the despair that haunts magical girls. This act also erased her existence from the memories of everyone except her friend, fellow magical girl Homura Akemi. Throughout the series, Homura had been traveling back in time to save Madoka from the tragic fate that befalls all magical girls. The series’ ending, while bittersweet, offered a glimmer of hope as Madoka provided a new world, and Homura appeared ready to move forward with her life.

Rebellion took a different path, depicting Homura intervening in Madoka’s ascension, seizing the power for herself, and crafting a new universe where Madoka exists, even at the cost of others’ suffering. The trailer for Walpurgisnacht: Rising continues from this point, hinting at an impending showdown between Homura and the other magical girls. While no official details have been shared, it seems likely that this film will wrap up the series.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising is set to release on August 28 in Japan, with no current information regarding an international release.
