GTA 6 Developers Seek Union Recognition from Rockstar Ahead of Launch

Grand Theft Auto VI is just around the corner, and the developers behind this highly anticipated open-world title are pushing for voluntary union recognition ahead of its release. Senior QA tester Josh Walter expressed in a statement, “Rockstar leads the industry in the games we create. We believe it can also lead the industry in how it treats the people who make them.”

Since 2019, the union has been working with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and now claims to represent a significant portion of the workforce across Rockstar’s offices in Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds, and London. Developers acknowledge that Rockstar has made strides in improving working conditions, including unprecedented pay increases and financial incentives for crunch time as they gear up for GTA VI. The union argues that formal recognition would enable developers to focus on enhancing pay transparency, flexible working arrangements, and establishing clearer guidelines around crunch, which refers to the intense overtime often required during game development.

Walter emphasized, “There is so much that is special about the studio and the work we put out. We want to protect that. When people face pay disparities, excessive overtime, or inflexible arrangements, they aren’t in the best position to deliver their best work. We want to collaborate with management to create a future where both the games and the working conditions are as strong as possible.”

Shanti Easton-Steel added, “This recognition bid is the result of years of effort from our members and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of many non-member colleagues. We hope more people will feel encouraged to join the union, but even for those who don’t, we ask for their continued support as we push forward with our goals of pay transparency, fairer crunch practices, and improved flexible working arrangements.”

This latest initiative from Rockstar’s union members comes amid an ongoing legal dispute with the studio following the dismissal of over 30 developers last fall. The IWGB alleges that this was an attempt at union busting to undermine their organizing efforts. Rockstar contends that the terminations were due to gross misconduct, including the leaking of sensitive information about GTA VI’s production in a non-secure Discord chat. As this legal battle unfolds in a UK labor tribunal, the IWGB is using the imminent launch of one of the decade’s most awaited games to sway public opinion in their favor.

If recognized, this union would mark the second game union in the UK, following the IWGB’s organization of Disco Elysium and Zero Parade’s maker, ZA/UM, last fall.
