Super Mario Galaxy Movie Set to Stream Soon

Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the top-grossing film of 2026, is set to make its streaming debut on NBCUniversal’s Peacock service on July 30. This follows its digital release in May and physical release in June.

While it holds the title of the year’s highest-grossing film, critics have not been particularly kind, with the movie currently sitting at a 42% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews have described The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as charming but lacking substance. One review noted that the film is packed with references to Mario games spanning four decades, relying heavily on nostalgia and stunning visuals to compensate for its thin plot. The sequel appears even less focused, pulling in various references from across the Nintendo universe to bridge story gaps.

Despite the mixed critical reception, fans seem to have embraced it, as evidenced by an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ viewer-rated PopcornMeter. This divide between critics and audiences has reignited discussions about expectations for children’s movies.

Financially, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been a success, achieving a massive opening weekend and becoming the first (and currently only) billion-dollar box-office hit of 2026.

While the movie has been available for rent at home for a while, it will soon be accessible on Peacock. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad as they embark on a galactic adventure to rescue Rosalina from Bowser and Bowser Jr., featuring plenty of spectacle and even a cameo from Star Fox’s Fox McCloud.

Additionally, there is an unannounced follow-up to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in development by Illumination and Nintendo.
