Original Baldur’s Gate Lead Designer Declines Chance to Create Baldur’s Gate 4: “I Don’t Want to Compete”
Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, famously declined the chance to develop a sequel. Interestingly, it wasn’t just Larian’s head, Swen Vincke, who passed on the opportunity; James Ohlen, the lead designer of the original Baldur’s Gate and co-lead designer for its sequel, also turned down an offer to work on Baldur’s Gate 4.
In an interview, Ohlen revealed that he was approached for the role shortly after Larian’s decision. However, his situation was a bit more complicated since his new studio, Archetype Entertainment, is owned by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the very companies behind the Baldur’s Gate IP.
“The day [Hasbro CEO Chris Cox] found out [Larian] wasn’t going to do it, he called me. ‘Hey James, what do you think about doing Baldur’s Gate 4?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t, I would fail, and here’s why I would fail,’” Ohlen explained. “I wouldn’t want to compete against that. Working on [Archetype’s sci-fi action RPG] Exodus is challenging enough, but going up against Baldur’s Gate 3? That would be madness.”
Since then, Ohlen has stepped away from Archetype Entertainment and game development altogether due to burnout. On a brighter note, it’s reported that Kevin Martens, another lead designer from Baldur’s Gate 2, is involved in a remake of that classic title. As for who will take on Baldur’s Gate 4, that remains a mystery, but good luck to anyone who attempts to follow in Larian’s footsteps.
