PS3 and Vita Stores Set to Close Next Year on PlayStation

Sony is gearing up to share some tough news for gamers, as the company plans to halt production of physical game discs by 2028 and will also be shutting down the digital stores for the PlayStation 3 and Vita next year.

According to a report, the PS3 store will close in July 2027 for most regions, while players in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua will see their stores go offline even earlier, in August 2026. Other Latin American countries and those in the Middle East will follow suit later in 2026. The Vita store will also be discontinued across all territories in July 2027.

This announcement may hit hard for fans of the PS3 and PS Vita, as these consoles hold a significant place in gaming history. The decision to close these stores was not made lightly, given their importance to the PlayStation legacy.

As Sony shifts its focus to enhancing the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most players are currently using, the company aims to allocate more resources toward delivering top-notch gaming experiences on these platforms.

To all the dedicated players out there, Sony expresses sincere gratitude for your unwavering passion and support, which has been instrumental in shaping PlayStation into what it is today. The future looks bright, and the company is eager to embark on new adventures and explore uncharted game worlds alongside its community.

The decision to close the storefronts stems from the claim that they can no longer support modern commerce systems. However, Sony assures that any digital games purchased on either platform will remain downloadable “for the foreseeable future.”

This isn’t the first time Sony has attempted to make such a move; back in 2021, they faced significant backlash from fans, which led to a temporary reversal. Even with the stores remaining online, many users found the experience frustrating due to a lack of maintenance, as support for credit card payments and PayPal was discontinued, forcing players to rely on physical gift cards for purchases.

With this closure, many titles for the PS3 and Vita will become inaccessible, especially since the PS5 does not offer native backward compatibility with either console.
