PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita to Close Soon
Sony has revealed plans to discontinue support for the PlayStation Store on two platforms, with the shutdown set to begin later this year. The PlayStation Store for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will officially close by July 2027, although some regions will see the impact much sooner.
“As the PlayStation Store evolves to accommodate modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards, the PS3 and PS Vita can no longer support these necessary updates,” stated Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications, on the PlayStation Blog. The first closures are expected to start next month.
Here’s the timeline for the PlayStation Store closures on PS3 and PS Vita:
SIE recognizes that “this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who cherish this era of gaming. The PS3 and PS Vita represent a significant chapter in our PlayStation history, making this a tough decision.”
Previously, in 2021, there were plans to shut down the digital storefront on PS3 and Vita, but that decision was later reversed. Now, it seems the end is finally here for the PlayStation Store on these platforms.
The PlayStation 3 debuted in November 2006, launching alongside the PlayStation Store, which provided access to digital games, demos, and other downloadable content. The PlayStation Vita followed in December 2011, also supporting the PlayStation Store from the start. Production of PS3 hardware ceased in 2017, while the Vita was discontinued in 2019.
Both the PS3 and Vita hosted a wide array of digital-only titles, so users of these older systems may want to secure any remaining content while they still can.
In addition to the PlayStation Store news, Sony also announced that it will halt physical game disc production in 2028, delivering a double blow to fans of physical media.
Correction: An earlier version of this story mistakenly stated that Sony had already closed PlayStation Store functionality on PS3 and Vita. This has been corrected to reflect that the store remains operational as of now.
The announcement raises concerns that the upcoming PlayStation 6 may follow a digital-only model.
