Christopher Nolan Launches His Debut Game on Roblox
You’ve read the book, snagged your IMAX tickets, and now it’s time to dive into the game. The Odyssey: Defy the Gods has launched on Roblox as the official game tie-in for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. It’s a journey that feels like something straight out of Homer’s imagination.
This free-to-play game is rated 18+ due to some mild depictions of fear and violence. On Roblox, The Odyssey video game is described as follows:
Defy fate. Sail home. The official companion to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. A survival sailing adventure across the ancient ocean. Gather a crew, manage your supplies, and earn the favor of the gods for safe passage.
Gameplay involves scavenging islands for food, resources, and crew members, navigating storms at sea, and solving puzzles. You can team up with friends to tackle the challenges. As of now, the game’s official page boasts over 140,000 visits, but only around 100 players are actively sailing the seas.
While Roblox is often associated with mobile gaming, it might seem like an unusual platform to promote a film designed for the grandest theaters. However, this isn’t Nolan’s first foray into the gaming world. The second trailer for his mind-bending film, Tenet, debuted in Fortnite on May 21, 2020, followed by a Q&A with star John David Washington. A month later, Epic Games hosted a “Movie Nite” event in Fortnite, allowing players to watch select Nolan films like Batman Begins, Inception, or The Prestige.
Nolan’s strong advocacy for theaters has led some to mistakenly believe he dislikes smaller screens. In reality, he has expressed that he’s perfectly fine with audiences watching his films on whatever screen they have, as long as they engage with the story. In a 2023 interview, he likened watching movies on phones to his own experience of discovering classics like Blade Runner through grainy pirated VHS tapes. If it sparks a love for cinema, then it’s all good.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which brings to life the iconic Greek epic attributed to Homer, marks his first film since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer in 2023. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, joined by a stellar cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Charlize Theron. The film is set to hit theaters on July 17.
