Comcast’s Division May Determine the Future of Peacock

NBCUniversal executives are about to discover if Peacock can thrive in the competitive streaming landscape. With Comcast planning to separate NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Sky from its broadband and wireless operations, Peacock will need to navigate the waters independently, without the support of a company that generated over $123 billion last year.

Since its debut in 2020, Peacock was primarily seen as an add-on for Xfinity subscribers. However, after Comcast discontinued the free access for Xfinity X1 and Flex users and eliminated its free membership tier in 2023, it indicated that the company recognized Peacock’s potential value. Despite exclusive content like the Olympics and live sports events such as Sunday Night Football and Big Ten games, Peacock still lags behind its competitors.

Between March 2025 and March 2026, Peacock added only five million subscribers, reaching a total of 46 million. In contrast, Netflix boasts over 325 million subscribers, while Disney Plus and HBO Max have 132 million and 140 million viewers, respectively, making Peacock’s numbers look modest. A significant factor is that, unlike its major rivals, Peacock is currently limited to the U.S. market. Comcast co-CEO Mike Cavanagh mentioned in March that there are no immediate plans for a global expansion, but this could change as the service seeks to grow.

Achieving profitability is another hurdle for Peacock, which reported $2 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2026 but also faced $432 million in losses, up from $215 million the previous year. NBCUniversal media chairman Matt Strauss expressed confidence that Peacock would turn a profit in the current quarter, emphasizing that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to streaming strategies. “Sometimes you have to play to your strengths, which is what we’ve been doing,” he stated at a recent conference.

Peacock is introducing features to enhance its exclusive content, such as vertical video streams for live sports on its mobile app and a new “Bravoverse” feed featuring clips from popular shows like Love Island and The Real Housewives, narrated by an AI version of host Andy Cohen. The service has also launched mobile games, including titles based on Law & Order and Jeopardy! However, it still struggles with the seamless streaming experience that users expect, as many report issues like buffering and disappearing titles from their “My Stuff” lists.

The sustainability of Peacock’s reliance on live sports and reality TV is uncertain. The cancellation of its popular series Poker Face last year left it without a flagship show that could draw in subscribers, similar to how Severance and White Lotus have done for their respective platforms. While Comcast’s co-CEOs have assured investors that the split isn’t a precursor to a merger or acquisition, speculation remains.

Analyst Peter Supino from Wolfe Research anticipates that “one or both Comcast units may merge with peers or competitors.” Media executives have expressed skepticism about the denials of potential mergers, with some insiders suggesting that Netflix might consider acquiring NBCUniversal’s assets. Ultimately, Peacock will need to innovate beyond its current offerings to avoid being overshadowed by competitors.
