Sony is discontinuing all physical PlayStation game discs.

Sony has revealed that starting January 2028, it will cease all production of physical discs for new PlayStation titles. After this date, new games will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and select retailers. However, titles released before January 2028 will still be offered on disc.

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the company stated. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

This announcement comes on the heels of the news that Grand Theft Auto VI will only be available as a download code in a physical box, which sparked a swift backlash from fans. While digital versions of games offer certain benefits, they also eliminate resale options, complicate game sharing, and require players to maintain access to console servers and accounts to enjoy their games.
