PlayStation Faces Backlash Across Social Media
Earlier today, PlayStation revealed plans to cease the production and manufacturing of new physical video game discs starting in January 2028. The online response has been overwhelmingly negative, with fans and players expressing their frustration across various platforms.
For instance, the official Sony Twitter account shared a simple tweet teasing the upcoming release of the next Spider-Man movie with just a spider emoji. Typically, this account garners a few hundred replies, but this particular tweet has exploded to over 3,000 responses, most of which are filled with anger directed at Sony for discontinuing PlayStation game discs.

On the PlayStation Instagram account, where posts usually receive around 200 to 300 replies, the latest video has racked up over 2,000 comments. Again, the majority of these comments express outrage over the abandonment of physical media, with many pleading for the company to reconsider or threatening to boycott future Sony products and games.
The most recent video on the PlayStation YouTube channel, a trailer for a World of Tanks update, has attracted over 300 comments, predominantly criticizing Sony for the recent announcement. Typically, these videos, unless they feature major trailers, receive fewer than 50 comments.
Here’s a glimpse of the sentiments being shared across Sony’s platforms:
“The PS5 will be my last PlayStation. Your decision to discontinue support for physical media and likely make the next console digital-only makes no sense to me, and I see no reason to continue supporting PlayStation.”
“Man, fix your PlayStation department; forget all that Spider-Man stuff.”
“I am no longer considering upgrading to a PS5 Pro since Sony will no longer be making physical games.”
“Sony, I’m pretty upset right now. What is this ‘no CD’ future for video games?”
“I’m convinced that the PlayStation 5 was my last console. No physical media means no control over what I own; this is a great shame to Sony.”
The situation is similar on the PlayStation Blog, where a new post announcing the latest collection of free games for PS Plus subscribers has drawn nearly 30 comments. These range from critiques of the game selection to strong disapproval of Sony’s decision to end physical games.
The same sentiment is echoed in Sony’s latest TikTok video featuring Grand Theft Auto 6, which is also skipping a physical release. The comments there reflect anger about the “physical” version of GTA 6 being merely a code in a box, alongside newer comments criticizing Sony’s recent announcement. PlayStation’s Facebook page is no different, with the latest post inundated with users vowing to withdraw their support for the company.
One of the more amusing instances of backlash occurred on the Sony Pictures official Twitter account. Typically, this account sees little engagement, and its most recent post about Talladega Nights leaving theaters after a limited return had only five replies as of July 1. However, one user, DarkKrazyman, responded with: GOOD THING I OWN A PHYSICAL COPY THEN HUH!!??
It’s clear that Sony is facing significant backlash from its frustrated customers and fans, regardless of where they post. It seems that telling players they won’t truly own the games they purchase in the near future doesn’t sit well with them. Who would have guessed?
