Datamining of Final Fantasy 7 reveals hints that excite fans about potential DLC.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second chapter in Square Enix’s ambitious remake of the iconic 1997 RPG, has yet to see any significant post-launch DLC or expansions. However, that might change with the upcoming finale, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Recent datamining efforts on the Epic Games Store have uncovered potential post-release content, aligning with game director Naoki Hamaguchi’s earlier hints about the possibility of story DLC for Revelation.

These findings were made using EpicDB, a tool that monitors content on the Epic Games Store. Among the listings are mentions of a Premium Edition, a Premium Plus Edition, and pre-order bonuses, which are standard for major releases. More intriguing, though, are the nine pieces of DLC hinted at, along with a “Story Expansion Pass.” While both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth included minor additions like extra summons and cosmetic items, only Remake received substantial story content post-launch with “Episode Intermission,” which was later included in the updated Intergrade version.

Hamaguchi noted in 2024 that Rebirth would not feature an “Intermission”-style expansion, allowing the team to concentrate on delivering the trilogy’s final installment as swiftly as possible. Following the official announcement of Revelation at this year’s Summer Game Fest, Hamaguchi suggested that story expansions could be back on the table for the trilogy’s conclusion. In a conversation with Famitsu (as translated by Genki), he mentioned that potential expansions could materialize if there is sufficient fan interest. While this indicates it’s not guaranteed, the demand from fans is likely already strong.

Players have been particularly vocal about wanting an expansion centered on the enigmatic yet beloved character, Vincent Valentine. Hamaguchi hinted that if Square Enix decides to create story expansions for Revelation, they could delve into the broader Final Fantasy 7 universe. This opens the door for Revelation to explore spinoff titles like Dirge of Cerberus, which features Vincent, or the animated sequel film, Advent Children. There are already clear connections between the Remake trilogy and the larger Final Fantasy 7 world.

Many fans speculate that characters from the prequel Crisis Core will show up in Revelation, especially since the PSP title was recently remade as 2022’s Crisis Core – Final Fantasy 7 – Reunion. The protagonist, Zack, plays a significant role in both Remake and Rebirth, and Square Enix has hinted that his story will continue in Revelation. Other characters might also make appearances, or story expansions could tie up any loose ends from the main game.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to launch in spring 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

It appears that director Naoki Hamaguchi is not looking to take on another remake after Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
