The top horror film of 2026 becomes a streaming sensation in just three days.

As July rolls in, the summer blockbuster season is heating up. New entries in the Toy Story and Minions franchises are lighting up theaters, while Supergirl and Masters of the Universe are the latest superhero flicks to hit the big screen. Spider-Man is set to swing in at the end of the month, but before summer took over, the spring was all about horror. One standout film, made for under a million, has raked in hundreds of millions and is now taking over video on demand.

Obsession hit theaters in May, crafted by newcomer Curry Barker. This film tells a cautionary tale about wishes gone awry, centering on an awkward guy named Bear (Michael Johnston) who buys a quirky toy called a “One Wish Willow” from a crystal shop. In a half-serious moment, he wishes for his crush, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), to fall head over heels for him. The wish comes true, but with a twist: Nikki becomes obsessively fixated on him, going to extreme lengths to keep his attention.

Made for just $750,000, Obsession exceeded expectations by earning $17.2 million during its opening weekend. Remarkably, it pulled in even more during its second weekend, with $23.9 million, a feat few films achieve. Six weeks post-release, it continues to draw audiences, with its box office total surpassing $370 million—a remarkable success for such a low-budget film.

While some fans are still catching Obsession in theaters, it became available on video on demand on June 30. Just three days later, it claimed the top spot on Apple TV’s video on demand chart and ranked third for rentals on Vudu in the U.S. Audiences are clearly enamored with Obsession, a fresh horror hit from a rising talent in the genre.

Though Obsession marks Barker’s first major success, it’s not his directorial debut. He previously helmed the 2024 found footage horror film Milk & Serial and gained recognition through his sketch comedy channel on YouTube. Currently, Barker is in post-production on his third film, Anything But Ghosts, a supernatural horror featuring Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw, which he also wrote and directed.

Additionally, A24 has tapped Barker to write and direct a reimagining of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, marking his first venture with an established franchise. In a conversation about the project, Barker described his vision for Texas Chainsaw Massacre as “grounded, brutal, and raw,” promising an experience that will be “very, very uncomfortable.” Given that Obsession hit all those marks, fans have high hopes for his remake.
