New Leak Suggests Story DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on the Horizon

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth didn’t see any significant DLC, but that might change with its sequel, Revelation. The third installment in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy appears to be gearing up for a story DLC, as indicated by a recent leak of an expansion pass on the Epic Games Store’s backend.

The backend of the storefront was updated with several entries related to the Final Fantasy VII Revelation listing, including mentions of various DLCs. Notably, one entry refers to a “Story Expansion Pass,” which was absent in previous titles of the trilogy. The Remake did feature a substantial story addition called Episode Intermission, focusing on Yuffie, which was included with the Intergrade version for PlayStation 5. In contrast, Rebirth only offered minor bonus items like the Magic Pot Accessory summon Materia and the Reclaimant Choker accessory.

It’s unclear what these backend references truly signify. They could range from simple bonus items and costumes to a more substantial story DLC. Fans are certainly hoping for the latter, especially since Revelation is the concluding chapter of the trilogy. Director Naoki Hamaguchi previously addressed the absence of an Episode Intermission-style add-on for Rebirth in a 2024 interview.

“We definitely hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing,” he stated. “I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.”

However, with no fourth game in the pipeline, Hamaguchi’s team seems to have the bandwidth to develop additional DLC for Revelation. “As for DLC beyond the third installment, I believe that will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support Final Fantasy VII as both a title and a franchise. If there is significant demand, we’d certainly be open to exploring those possibilities proactively,” he mentioned earlier this year.

While this response is somewhat vague, the theory of Revelation receiving DLC gains traction with the game set to launch in spring 2027, just about a year before the anticipated release of the PS6. It’s possible that history could repeat itself, leading to an upgraded version of Revelation for next-gen consoles, potentially featuring a new story chapter as well.
