Danny McBride, a devoted fan, is set to direct a new G.I. Joe movie.
Danny McBride, known for his role in the TV series The Righteous Gemstones, is diving into the world of G.I. Joe with Paramount’s upcoming film, marking the franchise’s return after several years.
During a recent chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McBride shared his passion for G.I. Joe, revealing that he was a bigger fan of it than even Star Wars. He pitched a movie centered around the Dreadnoks, a notorious mercenary group in the G.I. Joe universe, to Paramount.
However, the studio suggested a broader reboot of the franchise and encouraged him to develop a concept for “G.I. Joe proper.” McBride collaborated with some of his colleagues from The Righteous Gemstones to craft a new script, which ultimately won out over one penned by Max Landis. He mentioned that “Paramount seems fired up about” his vision for the series and hinted at the unique direction he’s taking.
“Weirdly, it grounds G.I. Joe; it’s not a comedy. It’s more about suspense and action, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun… You’re following Duke and a group of other Joes… The film is set in Springfield, a town that’s secretly controlled by Cobra,” he explained.
While details are still emerging about McBride’s G.I. Joe movie, it’s thrilling to catch a glimpse of what the franchise’s cinematic comeback will entail. This will be the first G.I. Joe film since the underwhelming Snake Eyes in 2021, and it appears to diverge from the crossover hinted at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
As we await Paramount’s official announcement and more details about the film, it seems the franchise is in capable hands with McBride. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a gaming fix, consider diving into the indie beat ’em up G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra.
