Persona 4 Revival Reintroduces Fan-Favorite Elements from the Anime, Exciting Fans Everywhere
Since its debut in 2008, Persona 4 has seen its story revisited numerous times, including through the enhanced Persona 4 Golden, two anime adaptations, and a manga. With the upcoming Persona 4 Revival set to launch in February, there’s a wealth of interpretations to draw from, and the recent trailer unveiled at Anime Expo has fans excited that Atlus might be embracing one of the community’s favorite takes on Yu Narukami, the game’s protagonist.
The first anime adaptation, Persona 4 The Animation, was followed by a Golden adaptation a few years later. While it shares the common pacing issues that often plague adaptations from lengthy games to shorter TV formats, it stands out as one of the few that effectively captures the essence of the game. For those who might not dive into the game itself, I often recommend giving the anime a try. It successfully highlights the key story and character moments, and I found myself rewatching it multiple times during my Persona 4 obsession in the Golden era.
One of the standout aspects of the anime is its portrayal of Yu. In the original game, Yu serves as a “silent” protagonist, primarily speaking only when players choose dialogue options. Persona 4: The Animation had the challenge of bringing to life a character designed for self-insertion, opting for a hilariously deadpan version of the teen. His one-liners and stoic awkwardness lead to some of the funniest scenes in the series.
Although this characterization hasn’t always carried over into Persona 4’s sequels and spin-offs, it has become one of the most beloved interpretations of Yu throughout the franchise. It seems that Persona 4 Revival is at least partially embracing this version.
During Anime Expo, Atlus dropped a new trailer for Revival featuring Rise, the teen idol who supports the Investigation Team in battles. Yu makes several appearances, including one memorable moment where he watches Rise perform. Instead of cheering enthusiastically, he holds up a heart-shaped sign with a glazed expression, appearing infatuated while maintaining his usual calm demeanor.
This moment has sparked a wave of memes, with fans photoshopping Yu’s sign for their own humorous takes.
We’ll find out how well this deadpan humor translates into Revival when it launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on February 18.
