Young Gamer Unleashes Unbelievable Rare Pokémon ‘God Pack’
When a local card shop in Alberta, Canada, shared a photo of a beaming young boy proudly displaying 10 golden Pokémon cards, many fans were skeptical. Some speculated it was an AI-generated or Photoshopped image.
While pulling a so-called Pokémon god pack is a rare feat, it’s not entirely out of the question. Each week, there are videos of players unboxing stacks of full-art Pokémon cards, but these typically don’t feature any golden cards. Known as Mega Hyper Rare cards, these elusive treasures are notoriously hard to find. For instance, in the recent Perfect Order set, the pull rate for one of these cards was estimated at 1 in 1786 packs, or just 0.06%. That’s a minuscule chance.
So, what are the odds of anyone pulling a pack filled exclusively with golden cards? And what are the chances of someone doing so before the set is officially released?
With the July 17 launch of Pitch Black approaching, many card shops have begun hosting pre-release events. During these gatherings, fans receive a ready-to-play competitive deck along with a few loose Pokémon packs. Those who participate in matches throughout the event are rewarded with additional packs at the end.
While it’s easy to question the authenticity of a rare pull, just hours after the initial post went viral, footage surfaced of the boy surrounded by open packs. In his hands were 10 individual Mega Darkrai Ex cards, each valued at around $750 ungraded at the time. The video captures the young fan meticulously arranging the cards one by one. If graded well by PSA, these cards could be worth up to $3,465 each.
“Is that a new kind of god pack?” one commenter mused on Facebook. “Or is this an error pack?”
“That is insaaaaaane,” another user exclaimed in the video comments.
Despite the excitement, some still debate the legitimacy of the pull. Critics argue that the circumstances make it hard to believe. To amass that many golden cards, one would need to open an extraordinary number of packs, especially since the set isn’t widely available yet. Alternatively, acquiring that many Mega Darkrai cards would require significant spending on resellers; currently, there are only 21 listings on Price Charting.
The card shop has not commented on the situation.
As spectators express their amazement and skepticism, the boy’s family is overjoyed. Jordi Stewart, who appears to be related to the young collector, shared on Facebook that the pull was met with cheers from both kids and adults.
“This little man went to the Pokémon pre-release today and got 2nd place in his age group out of 8, which meant he got another pack, and what was in that pack was beyond what anyone expected,” Stewart wrote. “His birthday week is starting off on the right foot, that’s for sure.”
Many Pokémon fans are understandably envious of this extraordinary pull. But if anyone deserves such luck, at least it’s not a Pokémon scalper.
Market prices are skyrocketing for the September TCG set.
