PlayStation Responds After Ending Disc Support, Faces Backlash: ‘Physical Games Forever!’
Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of the PlayStation X account after its July 1 announcement about Sony’s plan to eliminate game discs by 2028. The wait ended today, July 7, with a brief video showcasing a new wireless arcade fight stick. However, the reception was far from positive. A gaming preservation advocate quipped, “Wireless fightstick? More like spineless corpo.”
Since revealing its shift to a digital-only model starting with the PlayStation 6 in 2026, Sony has faced a barrage of criticism across all its social media platforms, even those unrelated to gaming. This decision has sparked outrage among many, including those who typically don’t engage in gaming debates.
In less than an hour, the fight stick video amassed over 12,000 negative comments and nearly 4,000 angry quote-tweets. Defenders of Sony’s all-digital strategy were notably absent. One fan expressed frustration, stating, “PlayStation is acting like nothing happened. They think we’ll forget, but we can’t let that happen. They’re trying to eliminate physical games with deceit and using us as an excuse. It’s disgraceful.”
A petition initiated by PNP Games CEO Jade Pearce has gained significant traction, surpassing 160,000 signatures. Some dedicated PlayStation fans are even contemplating whether to upgrade to the PS6 or switch to PC, which offers more flexibility and DRM-free options. The backlash against Sony’s move away from physical media is further fueled by the recent removal of numerous digital movie purchases from customer accounts due to expired license agreements.
Will Sony reconsider its stance? The company previously reversed its decision to close the PS3 and Vita storefronts, but many are skeptical this time around. With the decision made and the shift to a license-only gaming future underway, one factory that produced PlayStation game discs has reportedly begun retooling to manufacture different products.
