First Trailer Released for Power Rangers’ Iconic Star’s Last Project
On November 19, 2022, the gaming community, especially Power Rangers fans, mourned the loss of a true icon when Jason David Frank tragically took his own life at the age of 49. Frank was best known for his role as Tommy Oliver in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the groundbreaking series that launched a franchise still thriving today. Tommy was the original Green Ranger, initially an antagonist who later became a key ally to Zordon’s team. He also donned the White Ranger suit and even portrayed a couple of different Red Rangers throughout the series. However, the Green and White Ranger suits remain the most memorable for fans. Frank’s enduring connection to the franchise, with numerous returns over the years, solidified his status as the most prominent figure associated with Power Rangers.
Before his passing, Frank had announced his exit from the franchise and opted out of participating in the 30th-anniversary special, Power Rangers: Once & Always, which featured many returning characters. Instead, he aimed to focus on new ventures, including Legend of the White Dragon, which recently released a trailer ahead of its theatrical debut on August 28.
Legend of the White Dragon follows Erik Reed (played by Frank), a former superhero who has been on the run for three years. Now, he’s ready to reclaim his role to defend his city and family from a looming evil. The trailer hints at a mystical storyline, referencing a prophecy that foretells a battle between the White Dragon and the Dark Dragon.
While not an official Power Rangers project, Legend of the White Dragon embraces its ties to the franchise, as the White Dragon suit resembles a blend of the Green and White Ranger designs. Additionally, the Green Ranger was known as the Dragon Ranger, making the hero’s name a nod to both. The film also features several familiar faces from the Power Rangers universe, including Jason Faunt (Power Rangers Time Force), Cerina Vincent (Power Rangers Lost Galaxy), and Ciara Hanna (Power Rangers Megaforce). This film also marks the final performance of Michael Madsen.
Filming for Legend of the White Dragon took place mainly in 2021, and Frank often shared his enthusiasm for the project on social media. Following his untimely death, the independent production company Bat in the Sun committed to completing Legend of the White Dragon as a tribute to him. After years of hard work, Bat in the Sun, with support from a distributor, has fulfilled that promise, and the film is set to hit theaters on August 28. It will undoubtedly be a bittersweet moment, allowing Power Rangers fans who admired Frank to catch a glimpse of what his post-Power Rangers career could have been.
Plus, the cast is incredible.
