Arcana Unleashed: The First True Test of D&D 5.5e

After a bit of a rocky start due to a major team overhaul, the latest iteration of Dungeons & Dragons, now known as D&D 5.5e, has rolled out a solid lineup of products, including core rulebooks and campaign settings for both the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft. However, one key element was notably absent until now.

The expansive adventure campaigns that defined 5e and contributed to its popularity are making a comeback with Arcana Unleashed, the newest mainline D&D offering set to launch this September as part of the “Season of Magic.” This core book serves as an expansion for players and Dungeon Masters, emphasizing high magic and featuring powerful spellcasting options, evolving magic items, arcane factions, and magical threats that could alter the fate of entire worlds. Accompanying it is Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a substantial adventure designed for high-level characters (levels 11–20), set in Thay, a perilous realm ruled by the formidable and sinister Red Wizards.

At 128 pages, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is a hefty adventure, though it’s still about half the size of similar products that characterized the 5e era. Titles like Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frostmaiden, Descent into Avernus, and Out of the Abyss typically ranged from 250 to 300 pages. Nevertheless, Deadfall promises a comparable scope, offering 10 levels of character progression for an engaging and lengthy campaign. The adventure is described as a “magical spy thriller,” where players must navigate the complexities of Thay society, where even minor errors can lead to dire consequences, ultimately culminating in a confrontation with the immortal lich Szass Tam.

The core contents of the Arcana Unleashed book include:

These products can be acquired individually or as part of a bundle that features the Arcana Unleashed Map Pack.

The subclasses are expected to include finalized versions of those introduced in the Unearthed Arcana arcane subclasses playtest material. For a preview of how these new rules play out in action, the second season of an official D&D actual play show is currently airing, showcasing a cast that previously tackled Ravenloft and will now face the treachery of the Red Wizards.

While the core Arcana Unleashed book is the highlight of this release, Deadfall is poised to be a significant testing ground. D&D 5.5e is still carving out its identity, and the design team is focused on listening to player feedback to create products that meet their expectations. Fans who have transitioned from 5e to 5.5e likely miss the grand adventure campaigns, as the latest edition has shifted towards broader offerings like campaign settings and mini-adventures, which provide DMs with quick, easy-to-follow outlines rather than expansive campaign frameworks.

Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall represents 5.5e’s first effort to deliver the kind of product that made 5e the most beloved D&D edition to date.

Arcana Unleashed is set to officially release on September 15, 2026, with preorders now available.
