New Trailer for Ghost of Tsushima Anime Hints at Link to Game’s Multiplayer Experience
Crunchyroll has dropped a new teaser for the highly anticipated anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, slated for release in 2027. While the trailer primarily showcases character concept art, the visuals are striking, featuring three masked warriors clad in intricate, skull-themed battle armor.
Information about the anime series is limited, but the trailer’s description hints at the storyline: “Ghost of Tsushima Legends follows one of the last remaining samurai as he defends his homeland of Tsushima against the Mongol Empire.” This suggests a narrative that echoes the game, which follows Jin Sakai in his fight against invaders, but it’s important to note that this isn’t a direct adaptation.
The trailer specifies that it is “Based on the PlayStation Game, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.” Legends is the multiplayer DLC for Ghost of Tsushima, later released as a standalone title, and it diverges significantly from the main storyline. Players can choose from four classes—samurai, hunter, ronin, and assassin—to battle supernatural foes inspired by Japanese folklore. The three characters featured in the trailer represent the hunter, ronin, and assassin classes, while the main character is likely to embody the samurai role.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”
Kamikaze Douga, known for their work on the Star Wars: Visions shorts “The Duel” and “The Duel: Payback,” will produce the series, with Takanobu Mizuno, director of “The Duel,” at the helm. Notably, Gen Urobuchi, acclaimed for his writing on series like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, and Fate/Zero, is involved in the project, handling series composition and co-writing the script with Satoshi Maejima. Character designs will be crafted by Takashi Okazaki, recognized for his work on Afro Samurai.
The anime was announced in January 2025 and will be available exclusively on Crunchyroll, aligning with Sony’s ownership of the streaming service. The original Ghost of Tsushima launched on PlayStation 4 in July 2020, followed by Ghost of Tsushima Legends in October 2020, with the sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, debuting in 2025.
