Backrooms Set to Release on Home Platforms Soon

After breaking box-office records during its theatrical run, *Backrooms* is finally making its way to digital platforms. Starting Tuesday, July 14, fans can rent or purchase the liminal space horror thriller for $24.99 on Amazon, Apple TV, and other digital storefronts.

Details about a streaming release and the availability of physical media, like Blu-ray, are still pending.

This film has emerged as one of the biggest success stories in cinema this year, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film from its production company. With over $359 million in global earnings, it ranks ninth at this year’s worldwide box office, all from a modest $10 million budget.

Director Kane Parsons, at just 20 years old, has made history as the youngest filmmaker to debut a movie at the top of both the domestic and global box office. He began his career creating horror content on YouTube, including the *The Backrooms* web series.

*Backrooms* draws inspiration from an internet creepypasta, which originated from a chilling image of a yellow room. This concept evolved through collaborative storytelling into a bizarre extradimensional space filled with eerie creatures.

The film follows Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a downcast furniture store owner who discovers a passage into the infinite liminality of the Backrooms. He eventually enlists others, including his therapist Mary, portrayed by Renate Reinsve, to explore this unsettling realm. As expected, their journey takes a dark turn.

This year’s box office has seen a surge in low-budget horror films that resonate with younger audiences, alongside Blumhouse’s viral hit *Obsession*. Interestingly, *Obsession*’s director, Curry Barker, is also in his twenties and started on YouTube, capturing attention that major Hollywood sequels like *Star Wars: The Mandalorian* and *Supergirl* have struggled to achieve.

In a recent interview, Parsons expressed that he is “definitely not done with *Backrooms*,” hinting at the possibility of a sequel. Meanwhile, Barker has several projects lined up, including a 2027 paranormal investigator film titled *Anything But Ghosts*, a reboot of *Texas Chainsaw Massacre* for A24, and another original project for Universal Pictures. With both Parsons and Barker gaining traction, it seems likely that more YouTubers and young directors will be given opportunities in the film industry soon.

“A series would be my dream scenario, personally. But obviously, a series is a whole thing.”
