Blue Prince Strengthened My Family’s Connection
I’ve always been the gamer in the family. When my son arrived nearly 11 years ago, I eagerly anticipated sharing my passion for gaming with him. He would pull up a chair beside me, watching intently as I navigated the seas in Sea of Thieves with friends, often donning a headset that was comically oversized for his little head, directing me on where to sail. Fast forward to now, and instead of him watching me tackle Clair Obscur, I’m sitting next to him as he takes on Calamity Ganon in Breath of the Wild. His true gaming love has been Minecraft for years; he enjoys the structure and tranquility of creative mode, and he has a blast stacking TNT blocks to watch them explode.
What surprised me was the gaming bond my wife has formed with our son. She’s made an effort to engage with Minecraft, joining him in his worlds, even if it’s not her top choice. However, her love for puzzles and narratives led her to jump on a recommendation for Blue Prince, a recent release on the Switch 2, which she bought for both herself and our son. They’ve been diving into it together whenever they can, already surpassing the progress of the friend who suggested it.
Blue Prince is a puzzle-solving roguelike where players explore a 45-room mansion day by day, aiming to reach the elusive Room 46 to claim their inheritance. Each day, the rooms shuffle, demanding both strategic thinking and the ability to weave together a complex story. This is where my wife and son shine together: they balance each other’s strengths. Our son possesses remarkable spatial awareness, easily recalling directions and correcting my wife when she veers off course. He quickly solves puzzles that require aligning pieces or flipping switches in the right order, often taking the controller from her to expedite the process. His knack for spotting subtle changes in a room is impressive, a skill he developed early on when he would notice differences during our preschool drop-offs.
My wife excels at grasping the overarching themes and piecing together the narrative. She breezes through word-based puzzles, especially those rich in symbolism, while they can frustrate our son, who tends to think more literally. Blue Prince has created opportunities for her to broaden his thinking and share her problem-solving strategies.
The most rewarding aspect is the excitement that the blend of game design and storytelling has sparked in him. His mind is always racing, contemplating how different elements of the story might connect. Despite facing some challenges with reading and writing, he has started his own notebook to catalog their findings, even writing them down! The drive to uncover the story through problem-solving has helped him overcome his hesitations about writing. This may seem small to some, but as a parent who has watched him struggle to express his thoughts on paper, it fills me with immense pride and emotion.
Gaming, especially Blue Prince, has become more than just a pastime for him; it’s a tool for enhancing his cognitive skills and logical reasoning. It’s something he can carry with him, offering strategies for everyday challenges. Does he spend more time on screens than he probably should? Sure, but the connection he shares with my wife through this adventure, and the way his enthusiasm has pushed him beyond his usual limits, makes the extra screen time worthwhile.
