After 16 years in development, this anime is set to debut on Crunchyroll.
Typically, when a manga gains popularity, it often leads to an anime adaptation while the story is still unfolding. However, some fans find themselves waiting years for their favorite characters to make the jump to the screen. This was the case for Toshiaki Iwashiro’s *Psyren*, a mystery and supernatural manga that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2007 to 2010. Despite selling over 4 million copies and enjoying solid commercial success, it wasn’t until 2025 that an anime adaptation was finally announced.
Set to premiere in October 2026, *Psyren* recently unveiled its first full trailer during a panel at Japan Expo 2026 in Paris. The trailer introduces us to the main characters, high school students Ageha Yoshina and Sakurako Amamiya, who are drawn into a perilous world filled with monsters by a mysterious group known as Psyren. Alongside other abducted individuals, they must navigate the dangers of this hostile realm to find their way back home.
*Psyren* embodies the classic elements of shonen battle and action manga: a high school hero driven by a strong sense of justice, a childhood friend in distress, and a diverse cast of supporting characters, each with unique abilities. The series also weaves in occult themes, enhancing its appeal as a gripping mystery. Its popularity was evident, as it received three nominations in Anime Japan’s “manga we want to see animated” poll.
One of *Psyren*’s few drawbacks was that it concluded before the anime boom of the 2010s, but it’s exciting to see that the current success of the industry is allowing older series like this to finally get the spotlight they deserve. Now, if only we could get an anime adaptation of *Vagabond*—dreams are free, after all!
*Psyren* will launch in October 2026 on Crunchyroll, and the manga is available in English.
