Missed out on Magic’s most talked-about Secret Lair? Here’s your chance to grab a great alternative!

In May, a new Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop titled Goblin Storm hit the scene, featuring a goblin Commander deck adorned with artwork from the talented Dakota Cates, known as Wizard of Barge. As expected, the Secret Lair sold out almost instantly, leaving many of Cates’ fans disappointed and unable to snag a copy of the sought-after product.

Cates inadvertently stoked the flames of frustration when he shared that he received only one copy of the deck from Wizards. While he has no say in the production or distribution of the Secret Lair, he decided to give back to his fans by launching a Kickstarter for the Goblin Storm Side Quest on July 10. This project offers a variety of playmats, sleeves, and other accessories that celebrate his artwork and his passion for all things goblin.

The Kickstarter has quickly become a massive success, raising nearly $280,000 at the time of writing. Backers can receive up to nine playmats, featuring art from the Goblin Storm deck, along with Wizard of Barge’s first card sleeves and deck box. Additionally, Cates is including artist proofs of the Mountains he created for the Goblin Storm deck as a special bonus.

The controversy surrounding the Goblin Storm Secret Lair was largely tied to Wizards of the Coast’s limited print run policy, which has drawn criticism from fans for years. This policy often allows scalpers to buy up products and resell them at inflated prices, as seen with the Goblin Storm drop. Despite the backlash, the company has defended its stance, citing logistical challenges as the reason for not reverting to the print-on-demand model used in earlier Secret Lair releases.

However, just last week, Wizards announced a print-on-demand charity Secret Lair drop, hinting that there may be a glimmer of hope for a policy shift. While it’s doubtful that more Goblin Storm decks will be printed, Cates is ensuring his fans can still enjoy his art in various forms.

The Goblin Storm Side Quest Kickstarter campaign is set to conclude on August 3.
