Buffy the Vampire Slayer is making a comeback next month, but there’s a twist.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer stands as a landmark in television history. Created by Joss Whedon and featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the series followed Buffy Summers, a teen with extraordinary powers who juggled her role as a vampire slayer alongside the trials of high school life. Recently, the franchise has remained in the spotlight with a Hulu revival in the works, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, which was set to be led by showrunner Chloé Zhao and Gellar reprising her iconic role. Unfortunately, the project was canceled in March, even after a pilot episode was completed.

In just a month, Buffy the Vampire Slayer will make a comeback in a fresh format. A new comic book series is set to launch on August 19, spearheaded by Kelly Thompson (Absolute Wonder Woman) and Stephen Byrne (Green Arrow and the Serenity comic). This comic will delve back into the Sunnydale universe, continuing the adventures of Buffy and her friends for a new generation. Joining the creative team are colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Jeff Eckleberry, with Nate Cosby serving as editor and packager.

Details about the comic’s storyline are still under wraps. A press release from Dynamite Entertainment describes the series as essential reading for devoted fans, while also being an inviting entry point for newcomers. It promises an epic event that unites all the characters in a narrative that captures the essence of what Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always represented.

The inaugural issue will span 32 pages and will be available both digitally and in comic book shops. The official synopsis hints at Buffy’s legacy: “Into every generation, a slayer is born. And Buffy Summers may have broken the mold. Though Buffy’s powers were varied and great, it was the love and devotion she inspired that was perhaps her greatest power. And when she gave her life to save the world, the people who loved her couldn’t live with that. This is that story.”

Concept art teases the return of fan-favorite characters, including Buffy, Spike, Rupert Giles, Dawn, Angel, Willow, and others.

Thompson is clearly invested in the Sunnydale universe, not only leading a new Buffy narrative but also working on a comic for Angel, the character portrayed by David Boreanaz, who had his own spin-off series. The two comics are interconnected and designed to complement each other.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Thompson stated, “Buffy Summers is, in my opinion, one of the best modern heroes of science fiction/fantasy. The show was wildly inspirational for a young Kelly, and like so many things that feel very lucky in my life, I’m not sure I’m a writer today without encountering Buffy at the right moment. This idea for Buffy has been sitting with me for a long time – and so when the chance to grab both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel came along, I couldn’t resist trying it. I hope you guys will enjoy the ride — it comes from a place of deep love for the franchise – and I’ll try my best to be worthy of it.”

Byrne also shared his excitement, revealing his long-standing passion for the Buffy universe. “I’ve been a lifelong Buffyverse obsessive, and I’ve got the VHS boxsets and DVDs to prove it. Working on this comic with such a phenomenal writer is a surreal dream come true, and I still can’t quite believe it. I can’t wait for fans to see what Kelly has planned,” he remarked.

Thompson and Byrne’s new Buffy story continues a rich tradition of comic book adaptations that began when the show first aired in the late ’90s. Over 150 canonical comic issues have been published, further expanding the franchise’s universe and its beloved characters.
