Marvel’s Upcoming Solo Film May Bring Back the Guardians of the Galaxy Vibe
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its ups and downs since the events of Avengers: Endgame, but 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stands out as a highlight in this new chapter. The previous films in the series, along with that unexpected Christmas special, have all been well-received. One of the reasons fans adore the Guardians is their ability to operate outside the typical MCU framework, embarking on wild adventures far from New York City and Earth.
Marvel’s upcoming solo film could potentially recapture that unique charm of the Guardians. Reports indicate that a Nova film is in the works, with Michael Waldron attached as the writer. Waldron has a solid track record with Marvel, having created Loki, penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and co-written Avengers: Doomsday.
However, it’s important to note that the project is still in its early stages, and while Waldron may take on directing duties if it progresses, there’s no certainty that a Nova film will actually materialize. This isn’t the first time Marvel has explored a Nova project, as a Disney Plus series based on the character was previously shelved. Still, there’s hope for a successful space adventure in the MCU.
So, where does Thunderbolts fit into the Marvel Studios lineup? Let’s explore.
Traditionally, Nova refers to Richard Rider, a member of the Nova Corps, who have already made appearances in the Guardians films, featuring actors like Glenn Close and John C. Reilly. The Nova Corps serves as an intergalactic police force, with Rider being one of its most notable members. He becomes the last surviving centurion after the Corps faces a devastating attack from Annihilus during the Annihilation event, which laid the groundwork for the Guardians of the Galaxy storylines that inspired the films.
A Nova movie could resemble a Guardians film, with Nova leading a team of Nova Corps members. With Rocket now at the helm of the Guardians, as seen at the end of Vol. 3, it’s possible that Rich Rider could join the crew, similar to his role in Al Ewing’s Guardians run, effectively turning the Nova film into a quasi-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. Regardless, the MCU could greatly benefit from a standalone film that doesn’t tie into any Avengers storylines or multiversal chaos. Nova could provide that fresh perspective, whether or not the Guardians are involved.
It’s worth noting that Rich Rider isn’t the only character to take on the Nova mantle in Marvel Comics. The younger Sam Alexander is also a member of the Nova Corps, and Waldron’s film could potentially focus on him. If that’s the case, there’s a chance he could cross paths with Kamala Khan and other young heroes, paving the way for a possible Young Avengers or Champions project, which fans have been anticipating since the introductions of Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and others.
Until Nova is officially confirmed for the next phase, it’s best not to assume that either Rider or Alexander will join the MCU. However, what is certain is that Marvel fans can look forward to two new movies this year: Spider-Man: Brand New Day this month and Avengers: Doomsday in December.
