Compulsion Games Seeks New Opportunities After Departing Xbox
Compulsion Games is on the hunt for new opportunities. In a recent LinkedIn update, the studio known for We Happy Few and the BAFTA-winning South of Midnight announced its desire to collaborate with other game developers on upcoming projects.
“We invite partners to leverage the talent and creativity of the award-winning team behind South of Midnight,” Compulsion stated.
It’s not every day you see a whole studio reaching out for work on LinkedIn; typically, it’s individual developers or job seekers. Just last week, amid significant layoffs affecting 3,200 employees, Xbox announced the spin-off of Double Fine and Compulsion Games, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are set to transition to new, yet-to-be-revealed ownership.
While Compulsion has avoided closure, its new independent status doesn’t guarantee stability. Funding for new projects is becoming increasingly hard to come by, especially as larger publishers are channeling their resources into generative AI and stock buybacks to boost shareholder value. Meanwhile, the limited funds available are often directed toward nearly finished projects, with deals structured to ensure publishers recoup their investments before developers see any profit. This is a key reason why some studios can shut down just days after launching a promising game.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for Compulsion Games. They may have been tossed from a sinking ship into turbulent waters, but this is the team that created South of Midnight. With their talent and creativity, they have the potential to navigate these challenges, provided they can secure the partnerships necessary to keep their projects afloat.
