Limited Edition Star Trek Cards Feature Autographs from Iconic Franchise Stars

Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond sets are a clever way for Wizards of the Coast to engage with dedicated fanbases and boost card sales. The upcoming Star Trek set, launching on November 13, is packed with premium offerings designed to attract Trekkies, including Collector’s Edition Commander decks and Scene Boxes that highlight iconic moments from Star Trek: The Next Generation and the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films. However, the set is also set to debut a brand-new card type that’s bound to spark a lot of resale buzz.

For the first time in Magic’s history, the Star Trek set will feature autograph cards. During the July 14 Weekly MTG stream, Wizards revealed two of the seven cards: Captain James T. Kirk, signed by William Shatner, and Captain Kathryn Janeway, signed by Kate Mulgrew. Only 200 copies of each card will be produced, available exclusively through Collector Boosters.

“They’re not all captains,” principal game designer Gavin Verhey mentioned during the stream. “There are some other characters that are so iconic they had to get in on the fun too.”

Since the remaining five cards must feature living actors, let’s speculate on some potential candidates. While Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard and Michael Dorn’s Worf are both getting their own Commander decks, they might not be among the autograph cards. This leaves a wealth of options from Star Trek: The Next Generation, such as John de Lancie’s Q and Jonathan Frakes’ William T. Riker. It would be great to see some love for Deep Space Nine as well. There are also plenty of possibilities from more recent series like Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

Regardless of who the other characters and actors are, these autograph cards are sure to become highly sought after, driving interest in Collector Boosters in a way reminiscent of the unique version of The One Ring from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.
