Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek expansion introduces the Borg to Commander gameplay.

Wizards of the Coast has unveiled the first look at Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek Universes Beyond set during the July 14 WeeklyMTG stream, showcasing cards that span the iconic franchise’s 60-year legacy. Among the highlights are four new Commander decks that allow players to recreate some of Star Trek’s most epic battles, featuring a blend of innovative mechanics and cards with a rich history in Magic.

The We Are the Borg deck is an Esper (white-blue-black) build led by the Borg Queen. This deck introduces a new Assimilate mechanic, enabling players to bring a creature onto the battlefield under their control as a Borg artifact creature with a +1/+1 counter.

“It actually started off as something just in the Commander decks, and then I liked it enough that I pulled it for a few other cards because saying that the Borg were assimilating things was just so iconic,” said Magic’s principal game designer Gavin Verhey during the stream.

Playing as the Borg will feel reminiscent of the classic artifact creatures known as Slivers, providing benefits to all your other artifact creatures as you assimilate them into the Collective. While the preview didn’t highlight specific Commander cards, a version of the Borg Queen found in the Black Welcome Deck grants all artifact creatures you control +2/+0 and allows you to Assimilate a creature from an opponent’s graveyard upon her entry. While the Borg typically inject living beings with nanoprobes to convert them into cyborgs, we can overlook Magic’s choice to use the graveyard to represent defeated creatures instead of just the deceased.

Klingon enthusiasts will enjoy a Mardu (red-white-black) deck led by Worf, the Chief of Security aboard the Enterprise, which emphasizes aggressive cards that impact the entire battlefield. A Bant (green-white-blue) Landing Party deck led by Spock will feature characters from the original Star Trek series and capture its ‘60s vibe. This deck will focus on landfall, an ability that triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, and is likely to utilize the Lander tokens introduced in Edge of Eternities.

While Edge of Eternities brought the first spacecraft Commander into play, the Star Trek set takes a different approach. The Jeskai (blue-red-white) Federation Fleet deck, led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, will concentrate on card drawing and deploying spacecraft. The base Star Trek set will include three versions of the Enterprise, along with Voyager and other iconic ships from the ‘80s and ‘90s Star Trek series.

All four decks will be available in both regular and collector’s edition formats when Magic: The Gathering Star Trek launches on November 13. More reveals from the set are expected on July 17 as part of MagicCon: Amsterdam.
