Overwatch Discontinues Updates for Popular Game Mode Due to Player Decline

I’ve been saying it for a while now: Overwatch is in a fantastic spot these days. One of the standout features Blizzard has introduced recently is Stadium, a MOBA-inspired mode that allows players to build a hero’s kit over multiple rounds. This leads to some wild ability combinations, pushing the “hero fantasy” to its limits for each character. However, despite Stadium giving Overwatch a significant boost when it launched in 2025, Blizzard has announced that no new characters or maps will be added to this mode.

Game director Aaron Keller shared this update in a blog post, explaining that both ranked and unranked Stadium matches only make up about three percent of Overwatch’s daily player base. As a result, Blizzard has decided to reallocate resources to other areas of the game.

The 5v5 format continues to dominate, while 6v6 is gaining traction. Stadium has found its niche with a smaller, dedicated audience. With this in mind, Blizzard will still provide seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards for Stadium, but they won’t be expanding it with new heroes or maps. Instead, they plan to take the insights gained from developing Stadium and apply them to future projects.

While this news is disappointing, it’s not entirely unexpected. Stadium is an incredibly fun mode filled with chaotic gameplay and strategic build crafting, but it demands a much larger time commitment than other modes, making it easier for players to opt for more traditional gameplay. At least the mode will remain available, and Blizzard will continue to monitor its balance. It would be a real loss if it were completely removed from the game.
