Overwatch Discontinues Support for Popular Stadium Mode
Overwatch’s Stadium mode is being phased out: Blizzard Entertainment announced that no new heroes or maps will be developed for this MOBA-inspired mode. Game director Aaron Keller confirmed the discontinuation of support for Stadium in a recent update, explaining the decision to wind down what was once seen as a promising addition to the hero shooter.
Keller noted that Stadium “has settled into a dedicated, smaller audience.” Internal data reveals that Stadium only attracts about 6% of daily Overwatch players. In contrast, core modes like Unranked Role Queue 5v5 and Ranked Role Queue 5v5 are far more popular, with 6v6 modes also gaining traction.
“With this in mind, while we’ll continue to support Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding Stadium with new heroes or maps,” Keller stated. “Instead, we’re taking the lessons we’ve learned from its development and applying them to our future plans.”
As of June, about 14 months after Stadium’s launch in Overwatch, the data shows the following:
With Blizzard halting future development for Stadium, the current roster of 33 playable heroes in that mode will remain unchanged, as it draws from the game’s total of 52 heroes. Without new heroes and maps, Stadium is likely to stagnate and see a further decline in player numbers in the months ahead.
Stadium was introduced to Overwatch on April 22, 2025, initially featuring just 17 heroes, with new ones added each season. Integrating new heroes into Stadium was a significant challenge, as the mode introduced numerous perks, mods, and reworked abilities for the heroes. Players could upgrade their characters over several rounds—up to seven—gaining extra armor, reduced cooldowns, and transformative powers. While the mode was complex, Blizzard provided predetermined hero builds to simplify the experience.
Keller’s update also mentioned that the Stadium team will contribute to future Overwatch updates, likely in response to the recent layoffs at Blizzard Entertainment as part of Microsoft’s broader restructuring.
Two major new gameplay additions for Overwatch are on the horizon.
