Mortal Shell 2 Physical Copies Are Flying Off the Shelves
Some companies might suggest that physical games are a thing of the past, but the developers of Mortal Shell 2 are discovering just how mistaken that notion is. With the game set to launch on August 20, it has been revealed that the limited stock of physical editions is nearly sold out.
The official Mortal Shell X account shared this news, stating that the demand for the physical edition has “exceeded expectations,” leading to full reservations across various retailers.
This situation presents a mix of good and bad news for Mortal Shell 2. Developer Cold Symmetry is now aware of the strong interest in their upcoming title, even if they can’t currently fulfill that demand. The announcement also mentioned that, given the proximity of the release date, it’s unlikely that more copies will be available before August 20. The team assured fans that they are collaborating with their distribution partner to address the ongoing demand, but emphasized that “there is no guarantee of a stock replenishment after launch,” as that decision is beyond their control.
The physical release of Mortal Shell 2 is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version. The special Revered Edition includes a physical disc and a collector’s box, along with several extras like an art book, SteelBook case, art prints, and preorder bonus skins. If you’re lucky enough to find a copy still available, the Revered Edition is priced at $69.99.
The discussion surrounding physical versus digital games has intensified recently. In early July, it was announced that Sony would cease production of physical discs for new games starting in January 2028, indicating that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will be digital-only. Shortly before this announcement, Sony also disclosed that over 500 movies and shows purchased digitally by PlayStation users would be removed from the PlayStation store and their libraries in September. This has made it increasingly clear to consumers that digital ownership is somewhat illusory, reinforcing the idea that true ownership comes with a physical copy.
Mortal Shell 2 is set to launch on August 20 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
