New York Governor Implements AI to Review All State Regulations
New York Governor Kathy Hochul may have just enacted a temporary halt on new AI data centers in the state, but she’s fully embracing the technology for her own initiatives. In a recent chat on Bloomberg’s Odd Lots podcast, Hochul revealed that her team is leveraging AI to sift through every rule, regulation, and policy to identify outdated laws.
Among the outdated regulations she highlighted are a $25 fee for taking a dog hunting and a requirement for pregnant individuals to obtain a permit to work past midnight. Hochul noted that without AI, it would have taken her staff around five years to review all state laws, but with the technology, they accomplished it in just a couple of months. This efficiency will enable her and state agencies to eliminate these obsolete regulations.
Earlier this week, New York became the first state to pause the approval of new hyperscale data centers for up to a year. During this time, lawmakers are set to develop regulations aimed at safeguarding residents from increasing utility costs and the environmental impact of large data centers.
“I want a government that’s not on your back but on your side, and using AI has been powerful to do that,” Hochul stated. “I think every level of government should use this… I’m going to make dramatic changes using the power of AI.”
