Roblox Introduces AI Tools for Mobile Game Creation

Roblox is gearing up to integrate AI directly into its mobile app, opening the door for users to create games with ease. This move could further saturate a platform already known for its mixed-quality content. The company is diving into AI, showcasing a preview of innovative AI world models akin to Google’s Project Genie, which allows developers to generate 3D game assets. Additionally, an AI assistant chatbot will support developers during the game creation process. The newly announced tools aim to simplify AI usage in Roblox game development, although the rollout will be gradual.

The feature, dubbed Build, enables users to transform text prompts into basic games right within the Roblox mobile app. According to a blog post, Build manages various aspects such as gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual styles, and sound, utilizing both Roblox’s proprietary AI models and open-source alternatives.

Roblox envisions Build as a means for “rapid exploration and refinement of ideas,” but there’s a concern that the ease of access might lead to an influx of low-quality games. However, the company asserts that games created with Build will be evaluated using the same retention-based metrics as other Roblox experiences, meaning that titles that fail to attract players won’t benefit from the platform’s discovery features.

“Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn’t include AI slop,” Roblox emphasizes. “The quality of games on the homepage isn’t changing: If no one plays it—no one can find it.”

Build will launch in public alpha on July 28th for users in New Zealand aged nine and older who have verified their ages. Games published through this feature will be accessible globally to users aged 16 and up. A basic version of Build will be free, with additional paid options for advanced users expected to be detailed later.

Roblox is also developing new AI agents to assist developers, which will be available in both Build and Studio. These include a playtesting agent, an analytics agent, and an agent designed to conduct experiments aimed at enhancing engagement, retention, and monetization. These features are set to roll out in the coming months.
