Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has been discontinued.
The hope for a mobile version of a Final Fantasy MMORPG has once again been dashed. The team behind Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has announced that the service for the currently active Chinese version will be shutting down in the coming months, and development on a global release will be completely halted. By the time it closes, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will have been operational for just over a year.
The developer, LightSpeed Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent, shared the news on the game’s blog. They explained that the decision to terminate the service came after “amicable negotiation” between Tencent and Square Enix regarding the licensing agreement. The announcement also mentioned “adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment.” Final Fantasy 14 Mobile launched in June 2025, with operations set to cease on September 30, 2026. As of today, new user registrations and microtransactions have been suspended.
Initially revealed in 2024, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was designed as a free-to-play version of Square Enix’s hugely popular MMO, featuring microtransactions. Rather than simply porting Final Fantasy 14 to mobile, the game aimed to adapt its story and gameplay mechanics for mobile devices. At launch, it offered nine playable jobs and covered nearly the entire plot of A Realm Reborn during its first year.
This closure adds to the list of mobile live-service titles that Square Enix has discontinued in recent years. Earlier this month, the company also announced that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis would be ending its service this October. However, some of Square Enix’s live-service games have found new life through console ports, like the upcoming Final Fantasy Resonance, which adapts the now-defunct Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
Despite this setback, there’s still plenty for Warriors of Light to look forward to, with the next expansion, Evercold, on the way. Set to launch in January, the seventh expansion will be detailed further at the Berlin Fan Fest later this month. The shutdown of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile may not significantly impact the MMO, as the complexity of the game, which requires precise timing in battles, can be challenging enough on a controller or keyboard—let alone a touchscreen. Interestingly, Square Enix had also planned a mobile port of Final Fantasy 11, another title in the series, but that project was ultimately canceled in 2021.
