Bethesda Unveils Remasters for Fallout 3 and New Vegas

Bethesda is gearing up to release remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas for modern consoles, as revealed in a recent announcement detailing the developer’s future plans. These remasters are part of a broader initiative to reinvigorate the Fallout franchise, which also includes the confirmation of Fallout 5 currently in pre-production and a new project being developed by Obsidian Entertainment.

In an official statement, Bethesda shared, “We have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now.” This includes Fallout 5, described as the studio’s “long-range destination,” along with a significant expansion for Fallout 76 titled Raven Rock, set to launch in 2027. This expansion will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3.

The announcement also confirmed two long-rumored remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. While no additional details or release dates were provided, these projects have reportedly been in development for several years. The remaster of Fallout 3 has been on the radar since at least 2020, when it was mentioned in court documents related to the Federal Trade Commission’s case concerning Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Bethesda also noted that there won’t be a “traditional Fallout Day broadcast” in 2026, but they are planning something special for Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027, with a live celebration in Washington, D.C. Fallout Day, which has been observed in 2024 and 2025, falls on October 23, the date marking the Great War in the Fallout universe.

The remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas follow last year’s release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, co-developed by Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios. Additionally, Bethesda celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Fallout 4 in 2025 with the launch of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, which included the base game, all six previously released DLCs, and over 150 items from the Fallout 4 Creation Club.

Originally launched in 2008 for PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360, Fallout 3 was the third major entry in the series and the first developed by Bethesda after acquiring the rights from Interplay Entertainment. Set in and around Washington D.C. 200 years post-nuclear war, players take on the role of a 19-year-old Vault dweller searching for their missing father.

Fallout: New Vegas followed in 2010, developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Set in the Mojave Desert, players assume the role of a courier caught in the middle of a power struggle among various factions vying for control of the area.
