Wolverine Trailer Sparks Over 10,000 Comments on PlayStation Discs

PlayStation enthusiasts are voicing their frustrations with Sony’s announcement to cease disc production by 2028, coinciding with the anticipated launch of the PS6. The latest battleground for these discussions is the comment section of the new Marvel’s Wolverine trailer, which has garnered over 10,000 comments in just two days, with many celebrating the value of physical games.

One popular comment highlights the importance of physical media, stating, “Wolverine’s treasured photograph shows the significance of physical media.” Another comment humorously notes, “Wolverine going mad over the loss of a physical photo is quite the choice for a trailer at the moment.” Fans are clearly upset with Sony’s decision, but they’re also enjoying the opportunity to poke fun. A third comment quips, “Wolverine was really getting PHYSICAL in this trailer, he has such a DISCtinct presence.”

While the comments remain relatively civil, it’s challenging to find any that don’t reference Sony’s significant misstep in recent years. The latest Wolverine trailer has yet to reach 1 million views, while previous trailers have amassed over 20,000 comments after nearing 10 million views. It remains to be seen if the Ain’t No Hero cinematic story trailer will become Sony’s most ratio’d video on YouTube or simply another instance of player discontent.

For now, Sony appears unfazed by the backlash, seemingly willing to let the controversy unfold. According to Japanese game industry consultant Dr. Serkan Toto, “Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users. Around 50 million people subscribe to PlayStation Plus. If we assume 500,000 cancel in protest, that’s just 1 percent of their business — not enough for Sony to reconsider. Digital is just too profitable.”

It seems unlikely that angry players will significantly impact Sony’s finances. An online boycott recently struggled against the popularity of Black Ops sports. However, the end of physical PlayStation games is still a few years away, and publishers can continue to produce new disc copies for existing titles for the foreseeable future. This raises the question of where the current backlash will lead. With 18 months until the transition, there’s ample time for players to express their discontent, but also for Sony to manage the situation.

Every new video, tweet, blog post, and showcase that focuses on the debate over physical games carries its own weight, even if it’s hard to measure financially. Perhaps Sony will find a compromise, allowing publishers to release new games on PS5 discs while keeping the PS6 digital-only. Alternatively, Sony may choose to continue its trend of retreating into a more controlled community and communication strategy, weathering the storm as it comes.
