Wuthering Waves is set to receive an anime adaptation as its developer ventures into animation.
An anime adaptation of Wuthering Waves, the popular gacha action-RPG from Kuro Games, has been officially announced. This marks the inaugural project under the new Kuro Onroad banner, which will focus on the developer’s animation initiatives moving forward.
The announcement trailer reveals that the anime is titled Wuthering Waves: Elysium. However, details about the project remain limited, with the trailer showcasing 3D animation and familiar characters from the game.
Kuro Onroad describes the series as “based on the world of Wuthering Waves.” This raises questions about whether the anime will reinterpret known characters or seamlessly integrate into the existing narrative and lore of the game.
It’s also unclear if Kuro Onroad is collaborating with another studio for the animation or handling it in-house. Nonetheless, the press release emphasized that Kuro Games aims for the project to “expand the Wuthering Waves universe beyond the game and provide fans with another avenue to engage with its characters, stories, and world through animation.”
The Chinese developer appears to be committed to long-term animation projects, having established the Kuro Onroad brand rather than merely licensing the IP. Wuthering Waves: Elysium joins a growing trend of video game adaptations into anime, with FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice set to receive an anime movie in September, and Ghost of Tsushima: Legends also being adapted into a series.
In terms of competition, Wuthering Waves’ gacha RPG counterpart, Genshin Impact, has an anime in development at Ufotable, though updates on that project have been sparse since its announcement in 2022. It’s uncertain which adaptation will debut first, as Wuthering Waves: Elysium currently lacks a release date.
