Steam Machine Prices Could Be on the Rise
The ongoing crisis in AI-driven components shows no signs of letting up; in fact, the situation is becoming increasingly critical. Prices for everything from SSDs to computer chips have skyrocketed compared to just a couple of years ago. If you’re into tech, you’ve likely heard this before as a theory. However, when even Valve is cautioning fans about potential price hikes, it raises concerns about whether the Steam Machine can maintain its current price point in the future.
In a recent interview, engineers from Valve discussed the pricing of tech components related to the launch of their mini PC. Yazan Aldehayyat, one of the engineers involved, mentioned that there are two potential outcomes regarding the component crisis: prices could either decrease or remain elevated for the foreseeable future.
While Aldehayyat doesn’t explicitly state that the Steam Machine will see a price increase, his comments suggest that the $1,049 console’s price could be at risk.
“Honestly, it’s still getting worse,” Aldehayyat remarked about the component crisis. “Just in case people are not aware. What people are seeing on retail shelves right now, from our observations, is lagging what we’re seeing from a bulk supply by at least three to six months.”
Looking ahead six months, the Steam Machine—often viewed as overpriced—might end up with a price tag that makes its current cost seem like a bargain. It’s worth noting that the Steam Machine wouldn’t be the only device potentially impacted by these price increases. Major gaming consoles have already experienced price hikes, with some seeing multiple increases within a single year. While subscription and software prices are being lowered to ease the impact, the general consensus is that conditions will worsen before they improve.
The unfortunate reality is that Valve didn’t intend for the Steam Machine to be this costly. During its development, Valve was reportedly pressured into accepting prices set by RAM suppliers, leaving little room for negotiation. Initially, Valve had hoped to price the Steam Machine closer to the $789 Steam Deck.
For anyone considering a Steam Machine, it might be wise to purchase before prices surge again. However, there’s a catch: the hardware is currently available only through a waitlist. Ironically, even if component prices rise, the Steam Machine could end up being a more budget-friendly option compared to what a PlayStation 6 or new Xbox might cost.
