Nolan Fans Hit the Road for Rare 70mm Showings of The Odyssey
It’s no surprise that film enthusiasts are embarking on epic journeys to catch a glimpse of a certain cinematic masterpiece. Following the weekend release of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, dedicated fans are sharing the lengths they’ve gone to experience it in the exclusive IMAX 70mm format, available in just 41 theaters around the globe.
According to the film’s official site, IMAX 70mm offers a distinct viewing experience with its 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which is notably taller than the standard rectangular format most theaters use. This means that viewers watching in this format will literally see more of the film, as the frame extends vertically to showcase the full shot. Notably, this film is the first feature-length project shot entirely in IMAX, thanks to the innovative Keighley camera, which allows for a lighter and more manageable filming process.
As excitement builds following its positive reception, many are rushing to see the film in IMAX 70mm and other formats. Some fans took significant leaps of faith, traveling long distances to one of the few theaters equipped to project this exclusive format for its opening weekend. Interviews revealed some incredible journeys, including one viewer who traveled nearly 300 miles from Ocala, Florida, to Fort Lauderdale using a combination of car, bus, and train. Others flew internationally, with one fan recounting their trip from Italy to the IMAX theater at the British Film Institute in London. Another dedicated viewer described a grueling 12-hour road trip from Brookings, South Dakota, to Regina, Saskatchewan.
In a revealing interview, one woman shared that she postponed plans for a second child to ensure she wouldn’t miss the film. “One of my friends got pregnant last year, and she’s like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to have your second child,’” said Amber Connaghan, a 29-year-old tech editor. “I was like, ‘No, I have to wait a few months. Otherwise, it’s going to be too close to ‘The Odyssey.’” Another impressive display of dedication came from a 33-year-old attorney from New York who purchased 18 tickets at AMC Lincoln Square to see it in IMAX 70mm multiple times over the next few weeks.
While these diehard fans have been rewarded for their commitment, others have taken to humorously lamenting their inability to see the film in IMAX 70mm without incurring hefty travel expenses. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond recently noted that while there’s a desire to expand the number of theaters capable of showing the film in this format, it’s simply not “practical” at this time.
Beyond the fervent fans, the film has made a significant impact at the box office, raking in $124.5 million domestically and $139.6 million internationally during its opening weekend, totaling $264.1 million. This marks the largest worldwide opening of Nolan’s career and the third-biggest opening of the year, trailing only behind major releases.
The film has garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences, praised for its grand scope, intriguing take on the Greek concept of xenia, and a climactic third act that delivers one of the most memorable moments in recent cinematic history.
