Final Fantasy 14 Takes Down FF11’s Notorious Boss, Shifting Player Fear to a New Foe
When Absolute Virtue made its debut in the MMORPG Final Fantasy 11, players found themselves locked in battles that could stretch nearly 30 hours. For three years, this boss was considered unbeatable, prompting Square Enix to eventually provide players with strategies and ultimately tone down the encounter. In Final Fantasy 14’s Echoes of Vana’diel raid series, Absolute Virtue makes a fleeting appearance before being obliterated by another foe.
This memorable moment occurs in Windurst: The Third Walk, the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy 11-inspired Echoes of Vana’diel alliance raids. In a discussion with an outlet, battle content designer Masayoshi Ishikawa shared that this moment was designed to showcase the power of the first major boss in The Third Walk: Shantotto.
“As she’s the first boss, there are limits on how strong we can make her,” Ishikawa explained. “In the distance, Meteor rains down during the fight, creating chaos, and as she unleashes a flurry of mage actions, Final Fantasy 14 players can easily recognize ‘this is a powerful black mage.'” He referred to the cutscene depicting Absolute Virtue’s defeat as “the cherry on top.”
Introducing Shantotto by having her utterly dismantle one of the most notoriously frustrating bosses in the history of Final Fantasy 11 is a brilliant move. It also serves as a heartfelt tribute to the original Final Fantasy MMO, which the Final Fantasy 14 team has woven throughout the Echoes of Vana’diel alliance raids. Absolute Virtue’s cameo is so brief that it might go unnoticed by players unfamiliar with Final Fantasy 11.
For those who have faced Absolute Virtue in the past, there’s a sense of relief knowing that this time, the creature isn’t a boss. However, things could have turned out differently. When asked if Absolute Virtue could have been the first boss of The Third Walk had it not been for the opening cutscene, Ishikawa responded, “Could’ve been.”
The development team may have opted against including an Absolute Virtue boss fight in this raid series because the character already exists in Final Fantasy 14. The Stormblood expansion introduced Absolute Virtue as a boss in the open dungeon The Baldesion Arsenal within The Forbidden Land, Eureka. This area pays homage to Final Fantasy 11, and Absolute Virtue fits seamlessly into that context. Thankfully, this encounter doesn’t last 30 hours.
Square Enix has released the schedule for the upcoming FF14 event in Berlin.
