RoboCop is making a comeback in a new TV series.

RoboCop is making a comeback with a brand-new TV series on Prime Video, as confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. The highly anticipated series, simply titled RoboCop, has been approved for an eight-episode run, with Ed Neumeier, one of the franchise’s original co-creators, stepping in as executive producer.

Peter Ocko, known for his work on Lodge 49 and Pushing Daisies, will take on the roles of executive producer, showrunner, and writer for the series. James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will also serve as executive producers under Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

The series will explore the narrative of a massive tech corporation that persuades the city to integrate a powerful robot into its police force—this robot being infused with the consciousness of a cherished, fallen officer. The producers have indicated that the show will delve into the original RoboCop’s themes surrounding unchecked corporate influence and the dangers of rapid technological progress.

“I’ve been a massive fan of RoboCop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream,” said executive producer James Wan. “What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and corporate accountability have only become more pressing. With Peter’s unique vision and bold storytelling approach, along with Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re committed to honoring what made the original iconic while making it relevant for today’s tech-driven world, all while crafting something distinctly new for a global audience.”

“RoboCop is a franchise that has resonated with audiences for nearly four decades—not just as an action spectacle, but as a sharp, provocative reflection of our relationship with technology and power,” stated Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios. “Peter Ocko has developed a vision that respects the essence of what made the original so enduring while creating something fresh and urgent for today.”

Recent reports suggest that the new RoboCop will feature a soldier-turned-cyborg named Mark Kyle. Wan is expected to direct key episodes of the series, which is set to begin filming in 2027.

The original RoboCop debuted in 1987, crafted by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner and directed by Paul Verhoeven. It was a hyper-violent action satire that critiqued rampant capitalism, gentrification, the privatization of public services, and corporate greed, earning its place among the greatest science-fiction and action films ever made. The success of the original led to two live-action sequels, RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993, as well as an animated series, live-action TV shows, comic books, and video games. A 2014 remake featuring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton also bore the RoboCop name but received mixed reviews.

Director Neill Blomkamp, known for District 9 and Chappie, attempted to revive the cyborg cop concept in 2018 with a project titled RoboCop Returns, which was based on a script by Neumeier and Miner and aimed to bring back Peter Weller as Alex Murphy/RoboCop, but that project ultimately stalled.

Fans are hopeful that the new creators will grasp what made RoboCop a classic and adapt it with the same fearless spirit that characterized the original, even if it means poking fun at the parent company of Prime Video. As of now, the new RoboCop series does not have a release date.
