Surprise DLC Brings Darkest Dungeon 2 Content to Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon, the original classic, is set to receive its first DLC in six years, marking a decade since its initial release.
Titled The Fire’s Edge, this expansion drops on August 18 and introduces two new characters from Darkest Dungeon 2: the Duelist and the Runaway. Players can also look forward to three new districts, a variety of new trinkets, tools, writing, events, and some unexpected surprises. Additionally, the update will incorporate features from Darkest Dungeon 2, including the burn mechanic, which aligns with the Runaway’s stealthy playstyle.
For those new to Darkest Dungeon, this DLC offers a perfect opportunity to dive in. The game is a turn-based roguelike where you assemble parties to navigate procedurally generated dungeons. It’s known for its punishing difficulty: characters can face permanent death, and the effects of debuffs and ailments are significant. The stress mechanic adds another layer of challenge, as characters can suffer severe trauma that may lead to a heart attack if not managed. A standout feature of Darkest Dungeon is its narrator, voiced by the late Wayne June, who passed away last year. The developers have stated they will not use AI to recreate his voice for new story content, despite having his permission.
This marks the fifth DLC for Darkest Dungeon, with one previous expansion, The Butcher’s Circus, being exclusive to PC. The Fire’s Edge will be available on PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms on August 18, with an Xbox version also in the works, though it currently lacks a release date.
