Pixar Faces Significant Layoffs Despite $1.2 Billion Success of Toy Story 5 and Hoppers
New Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has initiated another round of layoffs, with Pixar facing significant cuts, as reported by an outlet.
The exact number of affected employees remains unclear, but National Geographic and ESPN are also part of this wave. This marks the third round of layoffs this year, aligning with a new “one Disney” organizational strategy. Earlier cuts in January focused on marketing, while April’s layoffs impacted over 1,000 employees, including members of Marvel’s visual development team, which plays a crucial role in shaping the MCU’s aesthetic.
Despite Pixar’s recent successes with Toy Story 5 and Hoppers, which together earned around $1.25 billion at the box office, the studio is still experiencing these drastic reductions. While Toy Story 5 was the standout performer, Hoppers also did well, raking in nearly $400 million before its transition to Disney+. This new franchise tells a sci-fi coming-of-age story about a young resident fighting to protect local wildlife from developers and urban expansion, outperforming Disney’s live-action Moana, which struggled at the box office.
“Pixar has just been utterly gutted of almost all its veterans,” expressed veteran artist Julia Lundman on Bluesky. “My partner Jamie has made it, but many of our friends have not. It is incredibly devastating.” Just two years ago, Pixar faced its largest layoffs ever as Disney shifted its focus back to quality over quantity. The current layoffs coincide with Disney’s exploration of short-form video content and the use of AI for new creations, reinforcing the emphasis on quality.
“Over the past several months, we have looked at ways in which we can streamline our operations in various parts of the company to ensure we deliver the world-class creativity and innovation our fans value and expect from Disney,” D’Amaro stated in April. “Given the fast-moving pace of our industries, this requires us to constantly assess how to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs.”
