Marvel Embraces Anime Style in Tōkon’s Impressive Opening Sequence
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls kicks off its public beta this weekend, and to build excitement, developer Arc System Works has unveiled the game’s opening movie, which feels like a true anime opening sequence. While some comic-book purists might not appreciate Marvel exploring different artistic styles, I find it refreshing. After years of seeing Marvel heroes often appear dull and overly reliant on greenscreen effects, seeing them brought to life in a vibrant anime style, especially paired with an emotional rock anthem, is a treat.
The opening showcases each character in Tōkon’s starting roster, giving special attention to fan favorites like Captain America, Spider-Man, and Iron Man, who have become the franchise’s icons. The way the music crescendos as each hero gets their moment is reminiscent of the best shonen anime—it’s simply exhilarating.
The last time Marvel delivered a trailer that resonated with me this much was for Marvel Rivals, which had a similar vibe. I still find myself jamming to the track “Rivals ‘Til The End” regularly.
I can’t wait to dive into Tōkon this weekend during the beta on PC and PS5.
