A Closer Look at the Upcoming Dragon Quest Monsters Game

First unveiled during the Dragon Quest 40th anniversary event in May, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World received a full trailer and a release date of December 3 during the June Nintendo Direct. Co-developers Square Enix and Tose Co. have now shared a wealth of new information about this latest entry in the spinoff series.

The DQ Monsters games serve as the Dragon Quest franchise’s take on the monster-catching genre, allowing players to capture, battle, and breed a vast array of charming creatures. This new adventure brings back Bianca and Nera, the hero’s two potential wives from Dragon Quest 5.

Your main party will consist of four monsters, with the option to keep four additional monsters in reserve. As you explore and engage in battles, you’ll have the chance to befriend over 500 unique monsters from eight different families. Each monster is defined by one of nine ranks (G through X), a size classification (small or large), and a distinct personality.

In addition to a variety of familiar faces from the main series, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World introduces several new creatures. Among them are the Slime Balls, a delightful trio inspired by onigiri, available in three flavors: sour plum, veggie mix, and shrimp tempura. The Bamboo Badboy attracts attention by mimicking a tasty bamboo shoot, while the Groovy Grouse embodies his name by dancing to the rhythm of the music playing in his head—an interesting way to live, to say the least!

The Wrangler’s Spirit ability is a fresh feature in DQM: The Withered World. This ability can activate once per battle, granting stat boosts to your party and potentially shifting the momentum in your favor. The effects of the Wrangler’s Spirit vary depending on whether you’re playing as Bianca or Nera. Bianca’s version heals HP and enhances attack power, while Nera’s restores MP and increases defense.

The synthesis breeding mechanic returns in DQM: The Withered World. After befriending a monster, you’ll need to level it up to 10 before it can be used as a parent for synthesis. Once synthesis occurs, both parent monsters will vanish, leaving behind a child monster that can inherit combat moves and passive buffs, potentially becoming stronger than its predecessors. Some monsters can only be acquired through synthesis, and as seen in 2023’s Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, certain sought-after monsters require merging four monsters (grandparent synthesis).

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is set to launch on December 3 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Steam), and Xbox Series X.
