Larian may revisit Baldur’s Gate 3 through an upcoming comic series.
Just when it seemed like Larian Studios had moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3 to focus on the next installment in the Divinity series, the Belgian studio is back in the spotlight with its acclaimed RPG. On July 23, during San Diego Comic-Con, an announcement revealed that a new Baldur’s Gate 3 comic series is on the way.
What caught fans off guard was a post on X that mentioned “With @larianstudios and @Wizards,” hinting at Larian’s involvement with the project. While it’s still unclear how the studio is collaborating on this comic, earlier that day, studio head Swen Vincke hinted that something exciting was in the works.
In response to a post from streamer WolfheartRPS celebrating the three-year anniversary of Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch, Vincke remarked that he “couldn’t have timed this better.” Many fans initially thought this was a nod to upcoming news about Divinity, the game currently in development, but it could very well have been a reference to the comic announcement that followed.
The appetite for more Baldur’s Gate 3 content remains strong, even three years post-launch. The news that Larian wouldn’t be developing a sequel disappointed many fans, despite the ongoing excitement for Divinity. Wizards of the Coast, the publisher behind Dungeons & Dragons and the owner of the Baldur’s Gate IP, is clearly not ready to let the game’s popularity fade. The upcoming D&D HBO series is set to act as a sequel of sorts to the game, and the comic could either continue the narrative or explore new angles. Delving into the backstories of the seven origin characters could enrich the lore ahead of the HBO series.
It’s still uncertain how Larian will be involved with Dark Horse’s new comic series. Perhaps some of the writers from the game will contribute to the story, or they might serve as consultants. Either way, this is exciting news. While Larian may not be working on a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, and with Wizards recently scrapping a planned D&D game from Giant Skull, fans can at least look forward to seeing Karlach take down enemies in comic form while waiting for Divinity or the rumored remake of one of the original Baldur’s Gate titles.
