Lost Star Wars Animated Series Co-Created by George Lucas Set for Public Release

Star Wars Detours, an animated comedy series envisioned by George Lucas alongside the creators of Robot Chicken, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, was first unveiled at Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012, just months before Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Following the acquisition, Disney reviewed the unfinished series and opted not to air it. Now, after 14 years, Detours is set to be publicly showcased as part of a new art museum established by George Lucas.

Recently, during a panel titled “Inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Green confirmed that some episodes of Detours will be included in the museum’s opening this September. He glanced at Ryan Link, the museum’s senior curator and head of film programs, to ensure it was appropriate to share this news. “We made a show with George, an animated series,” Green stated. “He wanted to create The Simpsons in the Star Wars universe. It’s called Detours, and there’s going to be a curation of episodes from that show on display for the public.” Green later expressed that working on the series was an incredible experience, calling it “one of the greatest experiences I think I’ve ever had.”

Back in 2013, Green revealed that nearly 40 episodes of Detours were completed, with over 60 scripts written for additional episodes. However, after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, concerns arose regarding the comedic portrayal of iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, especially with a new film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in the works. The company was apprehensive about introducing these characters through a comedic lens before the release of their next major saga film.

“Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy,” Lucasfilm and Disney explained in 2013. “In light of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.”

That postponement turned out to last over a decade, with only a selection of episodes now set to be featured in a museum exhibit.
