Johnny Depp Embraces the Misfit Role in New Ebenezer Trailer
What’s on the agenda today? It’s Ebenezer Trailer Day, marking the return of Johnny Depp as “the master of misfits” in his latest role as Ebenezer Scrooge. The trailer teases that this version of Ebenezer will present “The name you know, the story you don’t.”
At San Diego Comic-Con, Depp made a grand entrance dressed as Scrooge, unveiling the first trailer in Hall H and mingling with fans in a recreation of the iconic miser’s Victorian office. The trailer draws inspiration from recent cinematic releases, reminding viewers of Depp’s memorable characters like Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter, suggesting that his portrayal of Scrooge will be equally unforgettable.
This new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is helmed by Ti West, known for his work in the horror genre on both television and film. West has previously directed titles like The House of the Devil and the X, Pearl, and Maxxxine trilogy. Given the story’s themes of haunting and transformative spirits, West’s expertise seems like a perfect match.
In the trailer, Depp fully embraces the role, delivering multiple humbugs and convincingly dismissing the holiday spirit as Scrooge. Notably, his character even gets engulfed by a haunted bed, echoing Depp’s first appearance in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. He joins a prestigious lineup of actors who have portrayed Scrooge, including George C. Scott, Patrick Stewart, Jim Carrey, Michael Caine, Guy Pearce, and Albert Finney.
Directed by West from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, Ebenezer features a talented cast alongside Depp, including Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen.
Mark your calendars—Ebenezer hits theaters on November 13.
