Logan Paul’s recent Pokémon venture falls flat.

Just days after a puzzling trip to the Pentagon, controversial YouTuber Logan Paul launched into a new Pokémon challenge. He claimed this endeavor would be tougher than anything he had tackled before, including selling a Pokémon card for a hefty sum. This time, Paul aimed to dive into shiny hunting while streaming live. However, things didn’t unfold as he had hoped.

Shiny hunting is the process of manipulating a Pokémon game to generate rare creatures known as shinies, which feature alternate color schemes. For instance, a shiny Charizard sports a striking black and red look. The odds of encountering these shiny variants differ across games, but they are generally quite low. While players can employ strategies to boost their chances, it often means grinding for weeks on end. It’s a test of patience, but Paul believed he was ready for the challenge.

On September 18, he announced his target: an Onix that he wanted to evolve into a golden shiny Steelix. Despite the appealing choice, the chances of finding a shiny Onix are a mere 1 in 8,192. Nevertheless, Paul committed to his livestream, vowing not to stop until he found that shiny Onix. “I could be hunting for days,” he declared.

The livestream kicked off on September 19, starting with high energy. As expected, Paul took the opportunity to promote a brand, specifically a digital Pokémon card platform. Midway through the stream, when a viewer questioned whether he was actually playing, Paul scoffed, asserting, “I’m not watching someone else do it. If I’m sitting in this room, I’m pressing the buttons.”

After about eight hours, despite his earlier promise, Paul asked his wife, Nina Agdal, to take over the game for him. He resumed control a couple of hours later, but his fatigue was becoming apparent.

“This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my life… this is nuts, bro,” Paul admitted during the stream. “My fingers hurt.”

Seventeen hours in, Paul began to argue with his co-hosts about the need for sleep. “You’re changing the rules a lot,” one co-host pointed out after Paul mentioned the stream would continue even if he stepped away. His friends, also weary of the shiny hunting grind, tried to convince him to rest, warning that they might find the shiny Onix while he was asleep, which would undermine the stream’s premise. Despite their concerns, Paul decided to sleep, leaving the stream running with just one friend.

“Did this just turn into a sleep stream?” one bewildered viewer commented in the chat.

Paul was away for about four hours before returning. Then, 29 hours into the stream, he called it quits once more.

“I might need the next hour to hang out with family,” he said while munching on a salad. At that point, he had stopped playing altogether. His friends reassured him it was fine to leave, promising to notify him if they found a shiny.

After stepping away for a bit, he returned with Agdal, who took over the game for most of the time until Paul came back. Ultimately, around 34 hours into the livestream, Paul ended the stream for good.

The shiny Onix was never caught. Paul hasn’t resumed the stream since, although he claims he will return eventually. Disappointed viewers may not be inclined to stick around next time, judging by the comments on the YouTube video.

“wtf.. they gave up,” one viewer remarked. “Larp,” another derided.

The infamous YouTuber previously spent millions hosting an event for cards with visible flaws.
